Monarez’s lawyers said she was targeted for standing up for science.
Four other agency leaders resigned on Wednesday. “We knew ... if she leaves, we don’t have scientific leadership anymore, †one of the officials, . “We were going to see if she was able to weather the storm. And when she was not, we were done.â€

As Trump threatens to expand federal control by deploying the National Guard to additional cities, 19 Democratic governors issued a joint statement Thursday condemning his actions.
“The President’s threats and efforts to deploy a state’s National Guard without the request and consent of that state’s governor is an alarming abuse of power, ineffective, and undermines the mission of our service members,†the governors said.
The statement comes as Trump hints that his next targets for federal intervention may include two heavily Democratic cities: Chicago and Baltimore.
“This chaotic federal interference in our states’ National Guard must come to an end,†the governors added.
Admiral says US ships are heading toward Venezuela amid drug cartel concerns
Adm. Daryl Caudle, the Navy’s new chief of naval operations, acknowledged to reporters in Virginia on Thursday that U.S. ships are heading into waters off South America to support “Venezuelan operations and missions†that involve drug cartels.
Speaking at a Navy base in Norfolk, Caudle cited the concern that some Venezuelans are taking part in large-drug operations. But he declined to provide specifics about the U.S. military’s goals, saying much of the information is classified.
Meanwhile, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked by a reporter Thursday about whether President Donald Trump was considering military strikes on Venezuela. She said she wouldn’t get ahead of Trump but said the president “is prepared to use every element of American power to stop drugs from flooding into our country and to bring those responsible to justice.â€
She reiterated the Trump administration’s position that President Nicolás Maduro is not the legitimate leader of Venezuela and has been indicted on accusations of trafficking drugs into the U.S.

Trump’s latest executive order is meant to prohibit union organization at many federal agencies, including subdivisions of the Commerce Department and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as well as federal entities like the National Weather Service, NASA and the U.S. Agency for Global Media.

The groups said that track record makes Grok incompatible with an OMB memorandum that says the federal government can’t use AI systems “if proper risk-mitigation is not possible.â€

Musk’s AI company announced in July it was awarded a U.S. defense contract for up to $200 million, alongside a few other AI firms.
Rubio heads to Latin America on his fourth trip in Western Hemisphere as top US diplomat
Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Mexico and Ecuador next week, making his fourth foreign trip in the Western Hemisphere since becoming President Donald Trump’s top diplomat in January.
Rubio, who has already traveled Latin America and the Caribbean twice and twice to Canada this year, will return to the region to discuss Trump administration priorities including stemming illegal migration, combating organized crimes and drug cartels and countering what the U.S. believes is malign Chinese behavior.
Rubio’s “fourth trip to our hemisphere demonstrates the United States’ unwavering commitment to protect its borders, neutralize narco-terrorist threats to our homeland, and ensure a level playing field for American businesses,†the State Department said Thursday.
Rubio will be in Mexico City and Quito between Sept. 2 and Sept. 4, the department said.
US announces $825M arms sale to Ukraine for extended range missiles and guidance systems
The Trump administration has approved a nearly $1 billion arms sale to Ukraine that will include extended range missiles and related equipment to boost its defensive capabilities as U.S. efforts to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia appear stalled.
The State Department announced Thursday that it had notified Congress of the sale of $825 million worth of extended range attack munition missiles and navigation systems for Ukraine. The sale will cover 3,350 ERAM missiles, 3,350 GPS units along with components, spare parts and other accessories as well as training and technical support. It said Ukraine would use funding from NATO allies Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway in addition to U.S. foreign military financing to pay for the equipment.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,†the department said in a statement.
The sale was announced as Russia continues to step up attacks on Ukraine even after President Donald Trump met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska earlier this month to press for a negotiated settlement to the three-year-old conflict.

The United States will not take part in an upcoming council review of its human rights record scheduled for November, wrote Tressa Finerty, the U.S. charge d’affaires in Geneva, in a letter to the U.N. human rights chief, Volker Türk.

The council examines the rights records of all 193 U.N. member countries about every four or five years, and the U.S. is due for its next review on Nov. 7.

Rwanda becomes third African nation to accept Trump’s deportees

CDC director is fired and other agency leaders resign
The administration's coincides with the resignations this week of at least four top CDC officials.
They include Dr. Debra Houry, the agency’s deputy director; Dr. Daniel Jernigan, head of the agency’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases; Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, head of its National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases; and Dr. Jennifer Layden, director of the Office of Public Health Data, Surveillance, and Technology.
In an email seen by an AP reporter, Houry lamented the damaging effects on the agency from planned budget cuts, reorganization plans and firings.
“I am committed to protecting the public’s health, but the ongoing changes prevent me from continuing in my job as a leader of the agency,†she wrote, noting the Trump administration's misinformation about vaccines and new limits on CDC communications.
In a different email, Daskalakis wrote: “I am no longer able to serve in this role any longer because of the ongoing weaponization of public health.â€

Monarez' lawyers say she's been targeted for protecting the public
Susan Monarez’s lawyers Mark Zaid and Abbe David Lowell issued a statement Wednesday evening saying she had neither resigned nor been told she was fired.
“When CDC Director Susan Monarez refused to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts, she chose protecting the public over serving a political agenda. For that, she has been targeted,†the attorneys wrote.
“This is not about one official. It is about the systematic dismantling of public health institutions, the silencing of experts, and the dangerous politicization of science.â€
CDC director Susan Monarez is out after less than a month on the job
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says Susan Monarez is no longer director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
HHS officials did not explain why Monarez is no longer with the agency.
Before the department’s announcement, she told The Associated Press: “I can’t comment.â€
Monarez was the agency’s 21st director and the first to pass through Senate confirmation following a 2023 law. She was sworn in July 31 — less than a month ago, making her the shortest-serving CDC director in the history of the 79-year-old agency.

FDA limits COVID shot access for millions of adults and children
U.S. regulators approved Pfizer’s updated COVID-19 shot Wednesday but with limits that could complicate access for millions of American adults and children.
Pfizer said in a release its vaccine is now approved for all seniors to protect against the virus this fall. But the Food and Drug Administration narrowed its use for younger adults and children to those with at least one high-risk health condition, such as asthma or obesity. That presents new barriers to access for millions of Americans who’d have to prove their risk — and millions more who may want to get vaccinated and suddenly no longer qualify.
This year’s updated vaccines target a newer version of the continuously evolving virus and are set to begin shipping immediately. But it could be days or weeks before many Americans know if they’ll be able to get one, with access dependent on various decisions by federal health advisers, private health insurers, pharmacies and state authorities.
The new restrictions — previewed by FDA officials in May — are a break from the previous U.S. policy, which recommended an annual COVID-19 shot for all Americans 6 months and up.
Researchers send letter to FDA on abortion pill safety
More than 260 reproductive health researchers submitted a letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday affirming the safety record of the abortion medication mifepristone.
In the letter, the researchers urge the FDA not to impose new restrictions on the drug and to make decisions based on “gold-standard science.â€
, who leads the FDA, hasn’t committed to specific action on the pill, but many Americans wonder if there will be new restrictions under the Trump administration.
Medical professionals call it “among the safest medications†ever approved by the FDA. But a Christian conservative group that sued the FDA over the drug says it has caused “tens of thousands†of “emergency complications.â€
Mifepristone is typically used with in medication abortions, which make up close to two-thirds of abortions in the U.S.
