Canada's Erin Brooks named rookie of the year on World Surf League Championship Tour

PENICHE - Canadian teenage surfer Erin Brooks finished third at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal after losing to American Gabriela Bryan in semifinal action Sunday in the third event of the season on the World Surf League's elite Championship Tour.

Brooks, 17, finished with a score of 11.63, behind Bryan's 11.83. Bryan, a 22-year-old from Hawaii, was then beaten by Olympic champion Caroline Marks of the U.S. in the final.
