The animal was last spotted on May 27 in the St. Lawrence Estuary near Les Escoumins, Que.

The release says if the whale is seen again — and weather conditions are favourable — rescue crews will try to disentangle the animal.

Conservation officials say about 85 per cent of North Atlantic right whales — only 370 are left in the wild — get entangled in fishing gear at least once in their lifetimes.

The equipment can cut into the animal's body, causing serious injuries, infection and even death.
